Finding Audrey – WHSmith Review
Fourteen year old Audrey has developed an anxiety disorder which makes it difficult for her to leave the house or even make eye contact with her family. Whenever her brother Frank has people visit the house (usually to play video games) Audrey usually makes herself scarce in the den, but when his gaming teammate Linus innocently walks in while Frank is distracted, Audrey has a panic attack and flees. The next time Linus visits he asks Frank to give Audrey a note apologising for freaking her out and the pair start a short but sweet conversation on scribbled notes ferried back and forth by her little brother Felix. Could this be the start of Audrey’s first friendship since her anxiety began? And could it help Audrey build the confidence to leave the house again?
Finding Audrey is a quirky, heart-warming and laugh-out-loud read, with characters that will feel as real as your own family by the end of the first chapter. Whether it’s Audrey’s Daily-Mail-obsessed mum, her brother Frank who can easily spend ten hours solid playing video games or her dad who just wants a bit of peace and quiet in front of Downtown Abbey, Sophie Kinsella’s eccentric cast of characters are both hilariously unbelievable and completely relatable. We warmed to Audrey and her family immediately and love her first person narration of living with anxiety and pushing against her comfort zone. This book features strong language and deals with issues around mental health.
