Watch Zoella’s I Was Here Review
This characteristically powerful novel follows eighteen-year-old Cody Reynolds in the months following her best friend’s shocking suicide.
As Cody numbly searches for answers as to why Meg took her own life, she begins a journey of self-discovery which takes her to a terrifying precipice, and forces her to question not only her relationship with the Meg she thought she knew, but her own understanding of life, love, death and forgiveness.
I Was Here – WHSmith Review
I Was Here opens with our lead character Cody sharing the suicide note she received on a time-delay email from her best friend Meg. When Meg is found dead in a motel room shortly after, Cody can’t understand how her friend could feel helpless enough to take her own life without Cody having any idea. As Cody sets off to Meg’s university town to pack up Meg’s things (at her parent’s request), she finds herself discovering all sorts of things about Meg that she didn’t know. Such as the stray kittens she’d taken in, the guy that hurt her and the messages she’d been sending on suicide support forums. As she digs deeper into Meg’s final months, Cody wrestles with her feelings of guilt, anger, grief and confusion. But then she discovers something that changes everything. Could someone else have been responsible for Meg’s death?
I Was Here is a raw and emotional story with a lead character that holds your attention from page one. When we first meet Cody, she is bitter and resentful as she’s dragged to vigils and memorial services to hear strangers talk about Meg as if they knew her. But after visiting Meg’s university house and realising that there’s more to learn about her friend, Cody takes us on a road trip to find answers. Gripping, heart-breaking and poignant, I Was Here introduces us to unforgettable characters and a perspective on life, love and forgiveness that will keep you thinking long after the last page. This story explicitly addresses suicide, death and grief, and features romance, sex, drugs, alcohol, smoking and some strong language.
