The WHSmith Book of the Year 2016: The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena

Shari is a Canadian author previously known for her critically acclaimed literary novels with a comedic element to them. Her first thriller novel was written as a way to rekindle her love of writing before starting her next book, but Shari found she enjoyed delving into the complicated twists and turns of suspense more than she expected. And when asked whether she’d be resurrecting any of her old books after the success of The Couple Next Door, she replied “Oh no. No. No. I want to do thrillers. It’s way more fun.”

The Couple Next Door begins with a well-meaning decision to leave baby Cora alone in the house while parents Marco and Anne attend a house party next door. They bring the baby monitor with them and take it in turns to check on her every half hour, but when the couple get back to the house in the early hours of the morning they find the front door ajar and the baby missing. As the police and the press descend upon their house, Anne and Marco are scrutinised for any sign of suspicion and it isn’t long before the cracks in their picture-perfect life begin to show. “I am absolutely delighted that The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena has been selected as the winner of the WHSmith Book of the Year for 2016. Lapena’s debut thriller is the most exciting I’ve read this year! It is completely un-put-downable, (I read it in one sitting) with twists and turns that will keep you hooked until the very last page. There has been a buzz about the book since it hit the shelves earlier this year which has been building amongst our staff and customers. We’re delighted to present the marvellous debut as a beautifully bound special edition.” WHSmith Fiction Buyer
