Of the 20 novels that P. D. James wrote, 14 of them featured her most famous character; detective Adam Dalgleish. Tall, dark and handsome, Dalgleish was a fantastic example of the popular gentleman detective and was notoriously private within the books. Within the series we saw Chief Inspector Dalgliesh promoted up to superintendent and then to commander as his success grew alongside his author’s. James’ earlier experiences of working for the NHS and in the police department played a huge part in her work and many of her mystery novels involved the UK’s bureaucracies. James struck a chord with her fans with her captivating characters, ability to create a suspenseful atmosphere and her subtle details that revealed extensive research.
One of the most celebrated crime fiction authors of our time, P. D. James lived an incredible life and will be sorely missed within the world of literature.
