Aries is the first sign of the zodiac. The astrological New Year does not begin on 1st January but at the time of the vernal equinox or the first day of Spring (Autumn in the southern hemisphere). This can be anytime from 20th to 22nd of March, dependent on the year.
I’ve depicted the myth of macho-man Jason as the archetypal Aries, and his pursuit and capture of the Golden Fleece gives a double-whammy of Arian qualities. Jason’s vitality and stamina makes him a hero and, after all, it is Aries the Ram he is determined to win!
Aries is the sign summed up by the personal ego. This is the assertion of the individual spirit that drives them to break from the crowd or collective to make their own name. Largely competitive, this is the sign that wants to win and is not inclined to see victory as anything other than a gold medal or first place.
The Aries ram takes the initiative and puts themselves forward to be a leader, but then there are also ewes or lambs that tend to follow the flock and prefer to play follow-my- leader. Sorting out the rams from the lambs boils down to the position of the ruler Mars in the natal chart, for this is the planetary force driving this fire sign.
As the first sign of the zodiac, Aries is a baby. No matter how old they are, there is a juvenile immaturity or charm which makes demands on people around them. People can pacify them but if Aries continues to yell it will try the patience of all the other signs, which leads to a damaging relationship where egos clash and everything falls apart.
The mature Aries is single-minded, inventive and totally committed to reaching their goal. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. That’s Aries for you – Jason all the way.
