Welcome to Valhalla!
For me, this is a homecoming of sorts. Long before The Lightning Thief, I was obsessed with Norse myths. I grew up on the adventures of Loki, Thor and Odin. I dreamed about Fafnir the dragon, conniving dwarves, magic-wielding giants and the great tree Yggdrasil stretching throughout the Nine Worlds. Norse mythology was my gateway into reading. It’s also what inspired me to write my own stories when I was in middle school.
I got the idea for Magnus Chase back in 2005, when I was still working on The Sea of Monsters. What if a modern boy died a warrior’s death and ended up in Valhalla, like the Vikings of old? What would Valhalla look like in the 21st century? At the time, I was too busy with Percy Jackson, but the idea for Magnus Chase sat with me, gathering momentum and waiting for the proper moment to be written.
At last, I can share with you The Sword of Summer, the first adventure for Magnus Chase. With each book I write, I have lots of fun, but this has definitely been the project nearest and dearest to my heart. I feel like I have come full-circle. I finally get to honor the Norse myths, which started me on my path as a writer. I hope you enjoy reading the novel as much as I enjoyed writing it!
Yours in Vikingness,
