Draw Your Own Dragon:

“Quite often children say to me that they don’t know where to start a story. I say to them that DRAWING a character is a great way to start. Sometimes I start to draw a dragon and then from there I can decide what type of dragon it is, what special abilities does it have, is it a big riding dragon that can take a Viking somewhere very fast, or is it a cute hunting dragon that you can hide down your jumper? I can then think about what part of the story they could be part of. And don’t worry too much about how good the drawing is, it’s all about your IDEAS.”

Design Your Own Viking Shield:

“Sometimes details – such as designing a Viking shield – can help you really get into your world. To be a good writer, you need to know your world REALLY well. In this particular example, I would want to think – which Viking tribes have shields and why, do they have any special features (like bits that stick out) and why, and who in the tribe gets a shield? You could even make it funny – what if someone in the tribe had a furry shield that tickled people, for example?!”

Story starters:

“You’ll notice that these story starters are actually around characters. That’s because characters drive the story forwards. When you know your characters, you know how they seem to other characters, how they would react to a big problem and what their strengths and weaknesses are. Pay PARTICULAR attention to the Feelings section – if you know how your characters feel, then you know how they are going to act!”
